Camino de Santiago by Bicycle

More and more pilgrims are deciding to do the Camino de Santiago by bicycle. Although the idea may seem attractive, the physical effort and the demands of the Camino require a thorough physical preparation in the months prior to the start of the pilgrimage.

Another factor to take into account is to know which route of the Camino to take, since, depending on the one chosen, you will pass through towns and areas with very different orographic profiles.

In general, all the cycling routes to Santiago have something in common, and that is that their stages tend to alternate in difficulty, although the French and Portuguese sides are considered the most accessible and easy ones, while the Camino Primitivo and the Camino del Norte are more complicated.

Among our most common routes are precisely the Portuguese Way along the coast or the last 300 km of the French Way. Although other of our most traveled options are from Ponferrada and León, we adapt to the client’s choice.

To make the experience more positive we recommend choosing to ride during the months of May, June and September, in order to escape the rain, snow as well as the hottest summer months.

After that, the choice of bike will depend on the type of Camino you want to do: if it is mainly asphalt, the best option will be a road bike. If, on the other hand, you want to follow the original route, the ideal choice is a mountain bike.

For those more professional cyclists, there are hybrid bikes, many of them adapted for the Camino de Santiago, which allow you to ride perfectly on the road and on rougher terrain.
