For being a Girl (Por ser niña), social cause of the Camino de Santiago in 2018

This October 11 is celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child, and the Xunta de Galicia through the Asociación do Xestion do Plan Xacobeo announces the signing of a joint agreement with the NGO Plan International to join the international campaign “Por ser Niña” focused on the defense of childhood and equality of girls in the world. This will be the social cause of the Camino de Santiago during the next 365 days.

In the presentation ceremony, held in the Auditorium of the Pilgrimage Museum, 40 boys and girls from the Nantes school in Sanxenxo participated in a short walk from O Monte do Gozo to the Plaza del Obradoiro.

Concha López, general director of Plan International, explained that “the situation of girls is a global problem that needs global solutions and implications, so having the Camino de Santiago, an international icon and important point of confluence of citizens around the world as part of the movement For Being a Girl, which has countless supporters in the 70 countries where Plan International is present, is a very important step in the defense of the rights of girls”.

To help this cause, more than 70 hostels along the Camino will become information points on girls’ rights, thus reaching many pilgrims and tourists.

Although any cultural event is a good opportunity to raise awareness about children’s rights and in particular the situation of girls in the world, we are delighted to see that the Camino de Santiago is also in solidarity with this social cause in which we plan to participate with our values as pilgrims.
